He said, ‘There isn’t a Plan B.’” I didn’t realize how sick I was – lingering between life and death,” Krantz recalled. Turns out my oxygen levels were so low that my organs were in danger of shutting down. “I was vomiting uncontrollably and aspirated. But, a post-surgery complication landed him back in the hospital and back on the operating table. Needless to say, he survived, went home and got on bed rest with around-the-clock care. “A few days later, as they were wheeling me into the operating room, there was quite a team around me and I was told that I may not wake up,” Kranz recalled with emotion. But, if he had any internal bleeding, there wasn’t much they could do – which was terrifying to hear. “I was really, really scared, and I thought to myself, ‘If this is the way I am going to be, I’d rather close my eyes and not wake up,’” he told the JHV.Īccording to Krantz, doctors at Houston Methodist Hospital told him that his neck was broken, and he would need surgery to fuse some vertebrae. When he opened his eyes, Krantz realized he was unable to move. The next thing he knew, he had passed out, hit his head and landed on the floor, face up. A then-77-year-old Krantz woke up to go to the bathroom. That was until a nearly fatal fall on April 6, 2018, changed his life and his outlook. For nearly three decades, Lewis Krantz has built custom homes for families in Bellaire, and despite his wife Sharon’s repeated asks for him to retire, Krantz was determined to work as long as possible. ![]()
